Your income is directly proportional to the need for what you do — your ability to do it and the difficulty there is in replacing you.

A lot of you may already have a business and you’re wanting to grow a business, or you’re a newcomer to entrepreneurship and want to start a business.

1. The need for what you do
For those of you already doing something, is there a need for what you do? If you’re already making money, then there is a need. If not, find a need that is high paying. Doctors, Lawyers, and professional athletes, get paid a lot. Anything that requires a specific skill set and a high amount of discipline and expertise is going to pay more.

Think about the different jobs out there and the difficulty it takes to do that job. For instance, a cashier at Walmart is something almost anyone can do and can be easily taught to do. You are not going to get paid as much. There is a need for that job, but may not be a difficult job to do.

2. Ability to do it
Really focus and hone in on your craft and become really good at what you do. Get around mentors and people and go to events where they can help you increase your ability in your specific area of expertise. Then you will make more money, and you will put yourself in the top 2% of people in your specific craft that are the best at what they do.

Take a professional football player; they get paid a lot because their fan base is willing to show up to the games, and if the fans are willing to show up for the games, the athlete will get paid more. This leads to playing on bigger stages — like in the NFL, etc. They are the elite of the elite and therefore, get paid more.

If you want to make more money, first go into a job, get a skill set that you can master that will pay you a lot for the work that you do and become very good at it.

3. Difficulty it is to replace you
If you concentrate on number 2, number 3 will take care of itself.

Here is the problem, people only get good enough. They’re in the 50% of people who are just mediocre at something. They aren’t in the top 1, 2 or 3%.

For example, I worked in retail for years, had the ability to make decent but not great money. I would get a little better at the craft, little better at selling, and a little worse. If I had a good day, I wouldn’t put in a lot of effort the rest of the week. That is the nature of a lot of sales people. Not as motivated to go out there and make big things happen.

The current blueprint and identity of people only says they will make X amount of dollars. The reason most people go out there and don’t really fulfill their full potential is that they are satisfied only making five deals a week, selling 3 houses a month, or selling 2 cars a week. You reach what you’ve reached before and get comfortable and don’t go passed that barrier.

If you want to be in the top 2% of people, you have to set and hit high goals, high outcomes, high intentions, and be willing to do the work to create the outcomes you want to create.

If you really want to increase your income, find a craft, find a need for what you do, get really good at it, master it, and spend all your time and energy doing that.

People will come out of the woodwork wanting to work with you because they know you are the elite. They know you are the Tiger Woods back in the day of golf; they know you are the Derek Jeter of baseball; they know you are the LeBron James of basketball. They know you are the best of the best!
